Vaginal discharge is a condition experienced by many women. Vaginal discharges that continue or recur for a long time may cause concern. Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Op. Dr. Tamer Gültekin explained the causes and treatments for recurrent abnormal vaginal discharge.
The most common reason for applying to the gynecology outpatient clinic is the complaint of vaginal discharge. The complaint of discharge from many reasons is most often due to an infection of the cervix or vagina. Although rare, it is a complaint that should not be taken lightly, as it may be associated with some malignant diseases.
Vaginal discharge serves an important cleansing function in the female reproductive system. The fluid made by the glands in the vagina and cervix removes dead cells and bacteria. This keeps the vagina clean and helps prevent infection. Most of the time, vaginal discharge is completely normal. Depending on the pattern of the menstrual cycle, the smell, color and amount may vary. For example, you may have more discharge when you ovulate, while breastfeeding, or when you are sexually aroused. None of these changes are cause for alarm. However, if the color, odor or consistency looks quite different from normal, especially if there is vaginal itching or burning, an infection or other condition may be encountered.
Any change in the normal bacterial balance of the vagina can affect the odor, color or texture of the discharge. There can be many reasons for increased vaginal discharge:
• Use of antibiotics or steroids
• Bacterial vaginosis, a bacterial infection seen in pregnant women
• Birth control pills
• Cervical cancer
• Chlamydia or gonorrhea (STD), sexually transmitted infections
• Diabetes
• Postoperative pelvic infection
• Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
• Trichoniasis, a parasitic infection typically caused by contracted and unprotected sex
• Vaginal atrophy, thinning and drying of the vaginal walls during menopause
• Vaginitis, irritation in or around the vagina
• Yeast infections
The treatment method differs according to the cause of the discharge. Chronic, that is, recurring, vaginal discharge is probably due to chronic vaginitis. Antibiotics used in the form of classical oral pills or vaginal suppositories can sometimes be ineffective. In this case, applying different alternative treatments is necessary for treatment. Recurrent vaginal discharge must be taken seriously, controlled and treated.
In addition, various hygienic measures can be taken to prevent vaginal discharge. Keeping the vagina clean, not washing it with cosmetic products, and using 100% cotton underwear are among the personal hygiene measures to be taken.
